Co-Themes: Community Resilience and Co-design

Although definitions vary, we generally follow the UN Sustainability Group concept in which Resilience is the ability of individuals, households, communities, cities, institutions, systems and societies to prevent, resist, absorb, adapt, respond and recover positively, efficiently and effectively when faced with a wide range of risks, while maintaining an acceptable level of functioning without compromising long-term prospects for sustainable development, peace and security, human rights and well-being for all (chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://unsdg.un.org/sites/default/files/2021-09/UN-Resilience-Guidance-Final-Sept.pdf). We have taken different approaches in characterizing and addressing community resilience, but all efforts rely heavily on community engagement, including elements of co-design as part of the NbS Design framework. Under the co-design principles, community takes an active and equal role with the design team in visualizing a sustainable, resilient, and equitable future. Traditional knowledge and the lived experience are important elements that inform the co-design approach, including issues of GEI, that can be assessed through an ecosystem services approach as part of a Monitoring and Assessment program.
